Description
Originally published in 1900 for piano, this work was dedicated to Ravel's patron the Princesse de Polignac. It was orchestrated in 1910 and has become one of Ravel's most popular works. It does not refer to any particular princess, dead or otherwise, but instead was meant as an homage to the 16th and 17th century Spanish court where the pavane was a popular slow dance. When asked about its title, Ravel said simply that he "liked the sound of it". Nevertheless, it is a particularly beautiful piece of music. All audiences enjoy this piece and I am sure your horn player will appreciate the challenge.
